Consulting

Clients

I work with leaders, boards and teams seeking independent advice on the management of their cultural assets, projects and organisational issues.

I specialise in helping clients resolve how to realise their organisation’s aims when they are facing specific challenges. Those challenges can be resources, operational, cultural, regulatory, and/or time.

Often working one-on-one with the organisation, board or project leader, I help them clarify the issues behind the challenges they are experiencing and provide a pathway that clients can go on to implement themselves.

Scope of services

  • Development or review of cultural and heritage sites and programs, reporting on any or all of the following:
    • governance
    • policy
    • strategic plans
    • conservation strategies and collections management
    • property management
    • business performance
    • interpretation strategies, education programs and visitor experience
    • organisation’s awareness of climate change risks, circular economy opportunities, climate-resilient pathways and transitioning to net zero
  • Design and decoration research and advice for significant buildings, interior decorative schemes and objects

My approach

Having worked as curator, manager and government regulator of a wide variety of cultural places and collections, I understand the challenges associated with their long-term stewardship. I work collaboratively, valuing peoples’ connection to place, and opportunities to embed regenerative practices in the sector.

I often work directly with clients on discrete projects to understand and analyse current issues and provide independent, high-level guidance on priorities and strategies to move forward. In addition, I collaborate with other design and conservation professionals, including providing specialist design advice on the decoration and collections of State and nationally-significant heritage properties.

Your project

Every place or collection has its unique context.

Each project typically involves understanding your expectations for the future of the place.  Apart from comprehensive site reviews, I can review specific statutory obligations, existing reports or business requirements, and simplify information for communicating with different stakeholders.  Where appropriate, I can undertake and/or facilitate strategic and operational discussions within organisations, boards or between clients and stakeholders. While I see common issues across different projects, each place has a particular significance and group of people who care for it.  Consequently, I work with clients to co-design processes and reporting which will resonate with their audiences.

Projects may include aspects of the following:

PEER REVIEW

Review of existing reports, policy, strategy, programs and interpretation, identifying gaps and opportunities

STRATEGY AND PLANNING

For business and cultural development plans, and funding proposals; ensuring significance, cultural context, strategy and implementation is clear, and prioritised

REVIEW AND REDESIGN OF CULTURAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

Ensuring overall cultural, environmental and financial goals are aligned for long-term sustainability and an enhanced visitor experience

COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES, PLANS AND POLICIES

Management, use and interpretation meets best-practice standards while policy, guidance and action plans are clear and achievable
