Melbourne Design Week 2017, ‘Watch This Place’ panel

As part of Melbourne Design Week, the Office of the Victorian Government Architect hosted the event ‘Watch This Place’ on Saturday 18th March, 2017, at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). Along with the Victorian Government Architect, Jill Garner, Tracey Avery was one of a group of Victorian Design Review Panel members who gave short presentations on propositions for the future of Melbourne’s built environment.

Tracey’s presentation – ‘Cradle to Cradle Architecture: Historic Models to Inspire Regenerative Living’ – looked at historic models of multi-generational living and their key architectural features.

The presentations were synthesized by graphic artist Jessamy Gee. Melbourne Design Week is an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.

Australian Museums and Galleries Association – Annual conference, 2019

As one of the speakers in the Lightning Talks session at the 2019 Australian Museums and Galleries Association’s annual conference held in Mparntwe/Alice Springs (13-17 May), Tracey Avery spoke about the problem of overlooking collections in Australian climate-change adaptation plans.

Reflecting on existing policy review and practical work on assessing significance, she offered suggestions for a national approach to ensuring that our most valued collection items are ‘on the list’ to be protected for future generations.

Abstract

“Collections? Sorry, they’re not on our list”: Making collections central to climate change adaptation plans

Australian climate change adaptation strategies rarely mention collections. Some plans anticipate diverting funds from ‘other’ areas towards priorities such as pre-identified significant agricultural areas and cultural heritage sites. Should we now prioritise key collections regardless of ownership? This talk will raise strategic approaches to collections considered central to our future.
